AB 854 – Stopped!

C.A.R. opposed AB 854 and it has been officially stopped. Yesterday, January 31, 2022, was the deadline by which the bill had to pass the Assembly to move on to the Senate. The bill did not have enough supposed to come up for a vote, thanks in large part to REALTORS® like you who voiced their opposition to it. AB 854 was an attack on private property rights and would have forced property owners to stay in the rental housing business for at least five years. Thank you for taking action on the Red Alert last week and showing the strength of the REALTOR® Party of California.

Stay Vigilant! Cyber & Phone Fraud An Ongoing Threat

by

Some members have received fraudulent emails, phone calls and texts, requesting phone numbers and personal information, along with fraudulent links.

These communications are not from NAR leadership. If you receive them, please do not click on any links or provide any personal information.

REALTOR® members are again receiving unsolicited phone calls claiming to represent “NAR health insurance.” These calls and texts don’t originate from NAR. NAR and its Member Benefit partners don’t sell or provide members’ telephone numbers to any third-party vendors. And NAR won’t make unsolicited calls to enroll members in an insurance program or otherwise solicit their personal information.

Also, beware of an email that purports to come from NAR leadership but originates from an unknown email address. NAR has reported this email scam to the proper authorities and is blocking it from their internal networks. NAR unfortunately does not have the control or ability to stop external emails or content.

Always be vigilant in protecting your personal information. If you receive requests for any personal information via phone or text originating from any phone number not known to you, do not respond. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of a communication or request from NAR, please hang up and contact their Member Support team directly by dialing 800.874.6500, or contact them via live chat or email.

Contra Costa County New Construction Ordinance

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, approved an ordinance to eliminate gas lines in all future development for unincorporated parts of the county only. That means that all new residential buildings, such as single-family, multi-family, and detached accessory dwelling units (ADU) will not be permitted to include a gas line. The ordinance also requires new construction of retail, office, and hotels to be all-electric as well (any of these buildings may also use solar/thermal heating in their project). However, any new development proposing to have a restaurant or any other use that is not a retail, office, or hotel would be allowed to have natural gas.

In California, 85% of real estate agents choose to do business as independent contractors. December: CA Housing Market Best Performance
in More Than a Decade, C.A.R. Reports

California home sales and prices ease in December, as 2021 state housing market posts best performance in more than a decade, C.A.R. reports

  • Existing, single-family home sales totaled 429,860 in December on a seasonally adjusted annualized rate, down 5.4 percent from November and down 15.7 percent from December 2020.

  • For 2021 as a whole, sales of existing statewide homes were up 7.9 percent from last year.

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 18) – California home sales and prices moderated in December as mortgage rates edged higher, but home sales for the entire year recorded the strongest pace since 2009, exceeding 2020’s level by 7.9 percent, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) said today.

“Despite signs of moderating in the second half of the year, California’s housing market continued to outperform last year’s level and…

2022 CCAR Board of Directors
Inducted at Inaugural Gala

President Debi Mackey and the 2022 CCAR Board of Directors were sworn into office on Saturday night at the Association’s 101st Annual Inaugural Celebration at Blackhawk Auto Museum. Featured guests included Master of Ceremonies Mark Ibanez (Channel 2 Sports) and Dave Walsh, immediate Past-President of C.A.R., who served as the installing officer. In keeping with the Harley Davidson/motorcycle theme of the evening, biker Spike* also made a surprise appearance in the program to help Debi pay special tribute to CEO Sheiren Diaz and staff.

In her acceptance speech President Mackey explained, “One of my main goals this year is to bring us all closer together.”

“The inaugural is themed with motorcycles because it has a special meaning to me; it is one of my passions and offers a sisterhood and brotherhood like no other. When we ride, no matter what bike you ride or what group you ride in, when we pass each other on the road we always give each other a peace sign, a nod or wave. We do that because as bikers we care about our sisters and brothers on the road. That’s what I want for CCAR: to form a REALTOR® sisterhood and brotherhood,” she said; concluding, “Please help me help you make the most out of 2022!”

*”Spike” is a tatted, tough-looking biker character created and performed by C.A.R. past-president Dave Walsh.
