Hot Issue: Wildfire Insurance Consumer Alert

On August 19th, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a mandatory one-year moratorium (from July 16, 2021) on insurance companies from non-renewing or cancelling residential property insurance policies within the specified areas due to the Governor’s July 16 emergency declaration. This action helps more than 25,000 policyholders who have been affected by the devastating Lava Fire and the Beckwourth Complex Fire in the counties of Siskiyou, Plumas, and Lassen. That includes more than 20,000 consumers who were already covered under last year’s moratorium, effectively extending their protection for several more months. See if your zip code is included here.

Additionally, in another release, wildfire evacuees could be eligible for expenses under their current insurance policy. Residents across California who have been ordered to evacuate due to wildfires may have homeowner or renter insurance to help with evacuation and relocation costs under Additional Living Expenses coverage, known as ALE. ALE coverage typically includes food and housing costs, furniture rental, relocation and storage, and extra transportation expenses. For more see their release here.

CCAR’s Richmond Building – Your Opinion Matters

CCAR’s Richmond office is in an area that is experiencing ongoing safety concerns. The Board of Directors is considering the potential sale of the current Richmond site in order to purchase another property in a better location within District 5.

This move will allow us to protect our assets and better serve District 5 members (District 5 includes the cities of Crockett, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Hercules, Kensington, Richmond Annex, Richmond, Point Richmond, Pinole, Rodeo and San Pablo).

In an effort to make ethics violations and the disciplinary process more transparent, C.A.R. is publishing the names of members who are found in violation of the Code of Ethics as well as summaries of the members’ unethical behavior.

Member publication is triggered only if the discipline imposed is a reprimand, fine, suspension or expulsion – anything other than a letter of warning or stand-alone education. The information will be published on the members-only section of car.org.

The Devastating CA Wildfires and How to Help

If you and/or your members would like to help, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the C.A.R. Disaster Relief Fund, which provides grants of up to $5,000 to help members of the California REALTOR^® family (including REALTORS^®, employees of REALTORS^®, and employees of local Associations of REALTORS^®) who have incurred substantial loss due to the wildfires or other natural disasters.

In addition, the North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) is a nonprofit located in Chico, CA that supports the rebuilding and revitalization of communities throughout the region impacted by wildfire. In light of the Dixie fire in Plumas County, NVCF has allocated money from its Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund to issue grants to organizations that are helping to provide basic necessities to evacuees of the Dixie Fire.
