In Memoriam: Leo Lewis Saunders | Apr 1934 – Dec 2024

Longtime CCAR member Leo Saunders passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born on April 17, 1934, in Oakland, California, and graduated from Oakland High School in 1952. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his service, Leo attended San Jose State University, graduating in 1960, and went on to earn his teaching credential from UC Berkeley.
Leo’s professional life included a successful career in real estate and college level teaching. Leo held several top-level leadership positions in the real estate industry and community, including:
CCAR President (1980), C.A.R. President, and NAR Vice President
CCAR REALTOR® of the Year (1984) CCAR Emeritus (1997)
C.A.R. Honorary Member for Life, and NAR Emeritus Member
NAR Distinguished Service Award (1999)
City Council Member and Mayor of Clayton, California
Leo is survived by his son Michael and grandson Brandon, his daughter Lorraine and son-in-law David, his youngest son Matthew. He will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Monterey, California, alongside his brothers in a ceremony on Dec 17th at 11am. No reception will be held following the ceremony.

False Reporting in the NY Times

The New York Times recently published an article rife with inaccuracies focusing on the American Property Owners Alliance (APOA). The reporter portrayed APOA in a fashion to falsely suggest that NAR is a partisan organization.
Facts vs. Fiction :: Here are the facts about APOA and NAR’s support for its mission:
APOA is an independent, nonpartisan organization whose mission is to advocate for the interests of all American property owners.
NAR provides an annual grant to APOA. APOA’s board and staff, however, operate independently from NAR.
APOA does NOT contribute to political candidates or parties. Instead, its grants fund issue-based advocacy focused on policies that impact property owners.
APOA supports groups on both the right and left side of the aisle.

FHFA Announces 2025 Conforming Loan Limits

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today announced the conforming loan limit values for mortgages acquired by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the Enterprises) in 2025. The conforming loan limit is $806,500 on one-unit properties and a cap of $1,209,750 in high-cost areas. The previous loan limits were $766,550 and $1,149,825, respectively.
The conforming loan limit determines the maximum size of a mortgage that government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can buy or “guarantee.” Non-conforming or “jumbo loans” typically have tighter underwriting standards and sometimes carry higher mortgage interest rates than conforming loans, increasing monthly payments and hampering the ability of families in California to purchase homes by making them less affordable.

NAR’s commission lawsuit settlement
receives final approval

The National Association of REALTORS®’ settlement resolving antitrust claims brought against NAR and others in the Sitzer/Burnett case has been granted final approval. The court heard from all parties as well as objectors and the Department of Justice. Once arguments concluded, the court quickly ruled to grant final approval. The court is expected to soon issue a formal written order.
NAR’s class-action settlement was granted court approval Tuesday, securing a release of liability for over 1.4 million NAR members, all state/territorial and local REALTOR® associations, REALTOR® multiple listing services (MLSs), NAR’s affiliate organizations and all brokerages with an NAR member as principal that had a residential transaction volume in 2022 of $2 billion or below. The settlement also releases MLSs and brokerages that chose to opt-in to the agreement.
A judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri delivered its decision following the final approval hearing earlier in the afternoon. As REALTOR® Magazine reported last week, parties who object to the settlement agreement still have the right to appeal.
