Title Fraud on the Rise: What You Need to Know

A new survey from the National Association of REALTORS® reveals growing concern over title fraud and deed theft, especially in urban and suburban markets.

63% of REALTOR® association advocates reported awareness of scams in the past year—most involving vacant land, not owner-occupied homes.

Efforts to combat fraud are active in 76% of areas, with strong support (83%) for electronic alerts to notify property owners of title changes.

NAR Approves Changes to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics

Last week, during its REALTORS® Legislative Meetings, NAR ratified changes to the Code of Ethics, specifically, the Standard of Practice 10-5 (“SOP 10-5”) and Professional Standards Policy Statement 29, which fall under Article 10.

The Code of Ethics is what distinguishes REALTORS® from other real estate professionals. It is the foundation of NAR’s ability to earn and maintain consumers’ trust as it fulfills its mission to preserve, protect, and advance the right to real property for all. To ensure these guidelines are up to date, NAR’s Professional Standards Committee is tasked with continually assessing and, when appropriate, amending the Code of Ethics.
